Friends become salamanders.

Dark slippery creatures couching under big stones.
Smelling like earth and dead things.

You were close, you were company.

But the you you were then is not the you you are now.
The you you were then is an old snakeskin.

Or the tail of a salamander,
tossed away in a moment of danger.

A part that had to die for the whole to live.
