Vertical Time

I have been thinking about what I call “vertical time” before.

Looking a Jerry Shawback’ images I’m always amazed how he conveys a mindset with a few well placed lines – where an author would need hundreds of words.

His style often reminds me of Proust: so devoted to a moment in time that to others might seem insignificant. But if you go into the depths of it: what an adventure! But a Proust description naturally stretches in time ( over pages) whereas you  take in a drawing by Jerry within a second. But then it takes time to ripen in your mind. Still: it is all there in the first impression.
